Bearcats outlast Scurry-Rosser in three games

Author: Haley Ross

Seven innings weren’t enough in the decisive game between the Whitesboro and Scurry-Rosser baseball teams on Saturday.

The teams were involved in a scoreless tie going into the top of the eighth inning of the decisive third game of the playoff series. It was then that the Bearcats broke through.
Whitesboro took advantage of timely hitting to score four runs in the top of the eighth to claim a 4-1 victory in the third game of a best of three bi-district playoff series at Richardson High School.

The Bearcats also won the first game of the series, 4-1, on Friday before dropping the second game, 10-0, Saturday afternoon. Whitesboro (18-13-1) advanced to the area round and will meet Emory Rains in a best of three series beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday in Princeton. Game Two will take place at 6 p.m. Friday at Princeton High School and a decisive third game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Princeton High School, if necessary.

GAME THREE: WHITESBORO 4, SCURRY-ROSSER 1 (8 INNINGS)
The Bearcats used three hits, two walks and good base running to score four runs in the top of the eighth to claim the series victory, 4-1, Saturday evening in Richardson.
Landon Newkirk and Dax Martin each hit RBI singles, Maxx Parker scored on a passed ball, and Jacob Knight drove in a run with a ground out.
The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Parker was able to retire the side before more damage could be done. Parker pitched the last three innings and earned the win.
Knight (2-3, SAC, RBI) and Brayden Bomar (2-4) led Whitesboro at the plate. Martin (1-4, RBI), Newkirk (1-3, HBP, RBI), Parker (1-2, 2 BB), Tracy Brees (1-4) and Max Hinsley (1-4) also contributed.

GAME TWO: SCURRY-ROSSER 10, WHITESBORO 0 (5 INNINGS)
Cole Hartzel stymied the Bearcats on the pitcher’s mound as the Wildcats evened the series with a 10-0 rout Saturday afternoon in Richardson. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Scurry-Rosser also took advantage of timely hitting and a trio of Whitesboro errors in the win. Knight and Troy Randall recorded the only hits for Whitesboro.

GAME ONE: WHITESBORO 4, SCURRY-ROSSER 1
Newkirk and Camden Stephens each hit two-run doubles, and Martin and Parker combined for a three-hitter in the Bearcats’ 4-1 series opening win Friday night in Richardson. The win also gave head coach Curt Cole his 300th victory.
Stephens’ two-run double in the top of the first gave Whitesboro a 2-0 lead that wouldn’t be relinquished. Newkirk gave his team a 4-0 cushion with a two-run double of his own in the fifth.
The Wildcats scored in the bottom of the sixth and had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh before Parker closed the door to earn the save.
Martin pitched the first five innings for the win. Parker threw the last two for the save.
