Pirates aiming for 10-0 record

Pirates aiming for 10-0 record

It was a question Collinsville football coach Garrett Patterson struggled to answer.

He wasn’t sure when — or if — the Pirates had ever completed a 10-0 regular season.

But Patterson could have a definitive answer of ”2026” if he leads Collinsville (9-0, 4-0 in District 9-2A Division II) to a victory against Cumby (1-8, 1-3) Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Collinsville.

With a 51-6 win at Quinlan Boles last week, the Pirates secured at least a share of the district championship and clinched the league’s top playoff seed.

One of Collinsville’s strengths this season has been its depth at the skill positions. Patterson said that depth could allow several reserves to see significant playing time Friday night.

”We have been repping our 2’s a ton this year,” Patterson said. ”Our depth has allowed us to get a ton of kid’s reps during the season. We are fortunate to have the number of athletes on this team that we do.”

With Cumby struggling through a 1-8 season, Collinsville could have an opportunity to give playing time to much of its roster.

The Trojans snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to last year’s first round of the playoffs with a 16-0 victory over winless Celeste last week.

According to Patterson, Cumby operates out of a spread offense, with Channing Herman and Kamdem Myers splitting time at quarterback. Osvaldo Ruiz is the Trojans’ leading receiver.

Defensively, Cumby runs a 3-4 alignment. Ruiz also plays free safety, while linebackers Hunter McPherson, Adrian Radley and Canyon Talley anchor the defense.

Collinsville enters the finale following a dominant performance against Boles in which the Pirates amassed 555 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Paxton Davidson passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns while adding 67 rushing yards and two scores. Chase Sheppard rushed 10 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 15 yards.

Gavin Mosbee led the receiving corps with five catches for 102 yards. Briar Whisenant added three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Caysen Schafer caught four passes for 33 yards and Carter Larance had two catches for 15 yards and a score.

Nick Castorena added a 16-yard reception, while Wyatt Moore rushed six times for 53 yards. Keaston Worthington completed a 16-yard pass and rushed for 10 yards.

Kicker Fernando Perez converted six of seven extra-point attempts and made his only field-goal attempt.

The Pirates’ defense was equally impressive, limiting Boles to just 51 yards of total offense and four first downs. The Hornets’ only touchdown came on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter.

Despite the lopsided victory, Patterson believes his defense still has room for improvement.

”I wouldn’t say it was our best performance,” Patterson said. ”I would have liked to get a few more stops early in drives.”

Collinsville will face either Maud or Simms Bowie in the bi-district round next week.

Patterson, who guided S&S to consecutive 10-0 regular seasons in 2013 and 2014, hopes his Pirates can maintain their momentum as the postseason approaches.

”We have continued to get better every week by attacking small things in practice,” he said.
