Bearcats visit Tigers with district lead on the line

Author: Haley Ross

Something will give Friday night.

Whitesboro (5-2, 1-1 in District 5-3A Division I) visits Gunter (6-1, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday in a matchup with major district implications.

A win for the Bearcats could force a four-way tie for the district lead if Pilot Point beats Dallas Life Oak Cliff. That would leave all four teams tied atop the standings with 2-1 records.

A win for the Tigers would clinch a playoff spot and move them closer to the district crown. Entering Friday’s game, Gunter and Dallas Life Oak Cliff are tied at 2-0, followed by Whitesboro and Pilot Point at 1-1. Pottsboro and Dallas A+ Academy are 0-2.

Gunter dominated the Battle of Texas 289 last week with a 27-3 victory over Pottsboro. The Cardinals managed only a field goal against the Tigers’ defense.

Gunter was led by the running back duo of Ashton Pinkernell, who had 13 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns, and Jayden Stogsdill, who added 85 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Quarterback Tristan Barton threw for 93 yards to complement the running game.

Whitesboro turned in a dominant defensive performance of its own, limiting run-first Pilot Point to 69 rushing yards in a 34-14 victory in the Battle of Bearcats along U.S. 377.

Pilot Point running back Josh Chumley, who has already surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season, was held to 33 yards on 12 carries.

Korbin Ross led Whitesboro with 19 tackles, while Shayne Gabbert added 14 tackles and an interception. Wyatt Winchester finished with nine tackles, and Victor
Chavez had seven tackles. Chavez also converted all four extra-point attempts and both field-goal attempts.

Offensively, Whitesboro was led by quarterback Colt Fagan, who threw for 208 yards and a touchdown while adding 24 yards and a score on 12 carries.

Justin Knight rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Camron Howard caught five passes for 112 yards and a score. Scout Regelean added 41 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
