Local authors Mark Dickson, Angie Young, Jaylene Smith, Dave Allen and Susan Bateman gathered on Oct. 8 at the Whitesboro Public Library to share their work and connect with readers.

The group of indie authors, dubbed Red River Authors, has about 20 members. They write a variety of books, including thrillers, suspense, mysteries, children’s books, memoirs and romance, and invites everyone to discover something they love.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. Anyone is welcome to join them to support local literature and explore new stories.

This month’s discussion focused on audiobooks and book signings. The group’s consensus on audiobooks was that many people prefer them, but it is costly to produce a great audiobook, and they are expensive.

They discussed several companies, including Spoken, ACX and Amazon. P.S. Smith (Jaylene) has already recorded many of her mysteries, as has S.B. Roth (Susan Bateman).

Book signings, publications, podcasts and speaking engagements are one way to raise awareness of the author and their work. Dickson made several suggestions on each of the points.

The great thing about indie authors is their books are intriguing, they can be found on Amazon and they are usually less expensive than notable authors.

Most of the authors have books available at Flowers by Faith and the Whitesboro Public Library. If you love to read, check out one of the authors listed above. You’re guaranteed to enjoy the book you pick.
