On the heels of a big win against Rivercrest, the Whitewright Tigers earned another important district victory Friday night, defeating a tough Honey Grove team, 35-21.

The Tigers (5-2, 2-1) turned in a strong performance on both sides of the ball to pick up their second consecutive district win.

“I was very proud of our kids’ effort,” Whitewright head coach Charlie Roten said. “They played outstanding in all three phases of the game.”

Nick Ulmer was the breakout star of the night, carrying the ball six times for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Ulmer also broke loose for a 68-yard run, the longest play from scrimmage for the Tigers.

Jacoby Brown also had an outstanding game, rushing five times for 36 yards and two touchdowns.

Colt Parker added seven carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. Parker also completed a 29-yard pass to Drake Freeman.

Nolan Rigby contributed six carries for 19 yards, while Nate Lowery rushed nine times for 46 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers came up with big plays when they mattered most. Key interceptions and fourth-down stops helped Whitewright seal the victory and keep Honey Grove (4-3, 0-3) from mounting a comeback.

The Tigers now turn their attention to another important district matchup as they return to the friendly confines of home Friday night to host the Cooper Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0).

Cooper enters the contest following a 49-7 victory over Tom Bean and will present another tough challenge for Whitewright.

“Cooper is very good and they are playing really well,” Roten said. “It will take a great week of preparation and a very good game to beat them. We need to continue to play really hard and eliminate our mistakes.”

Honey Grove will look to bounce back Friday when it travels to Wolfe City.
