Battle of 377 Bearcats set for Friday in Whitesboro

Author: Haley Ross

Pilot Point and Whitesboro have plenty in common.

U.S. Highway 377 runs through both cities, and both schools share the Bearcat mascot. But Friday night, only one team will emerge victorious.

Pilot Point (5-1, 1-0) and Whitesboro (4-2, 0-1) meet in a crucial District 5-3A-Division I contest at 7 p.m. Friday in Whitesboro.

Pilot Point enters the matchup following a 34-6 victory against Pottsboro, while Whitesboro suffered a 55-48 setback against Dallas Life Oak Cliff.

Both teams operate out of the spread offense, although they have different philosophies. Whitesboro features a more balanced attack between the run and pass, while Pilot Point relies more heavily on its ground game.

Running back Josh Chumley is Pilot Point’s go-to player with 888 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing.

L. Daniel (472 yards, six TDs passing) is Pilot Point’s quarterback, while S. Campbell (six catches, 184 yards, three TDs) is the leading receiver.

H. Fischer (461 yards, five TDs rushing; seven catches, 168 yards, two TDs receiving; 50-yard TD pass) and D. Pickerl (332 yards, four TDs rushing) are other contributors.

Pilot Point operates defensively out of a 10-1 alignment, which emphasizes cornerbacks playing man-to-man coverage at the line of scrimmage and six or seven defenders in the tackle box.

Depending on the number of receivers the opposition uses, Pilot Point’s alignment can resemble anything from a 3-3-5 to a 4-4-3.

Whitesboro is led offensively by quarterback Colt Fagan (1,335 yards, 15 TDs passing; 289 yards, six TDs rushing), running back Justin Knight (540 yards, six TDs rushing) and receiver Camron Howard (38 catches, 625 yards, six TDs).

Ian Bruce (16 catches, 369 yards, five TDs), Scout Regelean (238 yards, five TDs rushing) and Wyatt Winchester (11 catches, 219 yards, four TDs) also contribute.

Defensively, Whitesboro operates out of a 4-2-5 alignment.

Regelean leads the team in tackles for loss (nine) and sacks (five), while Elias Degraffenreed (66 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks), Shayne Gabbert (56 tackles, two interceptions) and Korbin Ross (67 tackles, five tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries) also contribute.

Last Friday’s loss in Dallas was a shootout between Whitesboro and Life Oak Cliff.

Fagan (443 yards, four TDs passing; eight carries, 113 yards rushing) and Howard (five catches, 206 yards, three TDs) led the way for the Bearcats.

Life Oak Cliff quarterback Cameron Phillips (494 yards, five TDs passing; 10 carries, 54 yards, TD rushing) led the Lions.

Jatavion Smith-Adams (15 carries, 125 yards, two TDs rushing; four catches, 76 yards, two TDs receiving), Loyace Grayes (six catches, 193 yards, two TDs) and Joshua Washington (two catches, 127 yards, TD) also contributed.

For Whitesboro, Knight (20 carries, 97 yards, TD), A. Nelson (TD run) and Regelean (seven carries, 25 yards, TD) contributed to the running game.

Bruce (seven catches, 126 yards) and Winchester (three catches, 84 yards, TD) also contributed to the passing attack.

Defensively, Degraffenreed led Whitesboro with nine tackles. Regelean (seven tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks), Ross (seven tackles, tackle for loss, sack) and Gabbert (seven tackles) also contributed.
