Democratic candidates for congressional, state legislative and judicial offices are scheduled to gather in Sherman on Monday, Sept. 14, for a campaign rally ahead of the November general election.

The Grayson County Democratic Party will host the event from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lucy Kidd-Key Auditorium, 400 N. Elm St. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Scheduled participants include Jason Pearce, candidate for U.S. House District 4; Holly Taylor, candidate for Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 9; Amanda Reichek and Monica Purdy, candidates for the Fifth Court of Appeals; and Catherine Thorne, candidate for Texas House District 62.

Kendall Scudder, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, and Michael Tijerina, a Democratic State Executive Committee member for Congressional District 4, are scheduled to serve as emcees.

Organizers said additional candidates could attend or send representatives to speak on their behalf.

The rally will give attendees an opportunity to hear from candidates and learn about their campaigns ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. A question-and-answer session is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Tijerina said organizers hope the event will give North Texas voters an opportunity to hear directly from candidates.

“At a time when our rights, our freedoms and the economic security of working families are under attack, North Texans deserve the opportunity to hear directly from the people asking for their votes,” Tijerina said. “This rally is about bringing Democrats together, building lasting connections and showing voters that they have strong candidates ready to fight for them at every level of government.”

Organizers said speakers are expected to address public education, health care, voting rights, reproductive rights, economic issues, government accountability and the Texas judicial system.

Barbara Rush said the event also reflects what organizers see as the increasing importance of North Texas in state and federal campaigns.

“Candidates will address the rising cost of living and the need to invest in public education, health care, water, energy and other essential infrastructure,” Rush said. “They will discuss protecting democracy and restoring independence, integrity and public confidence in the Texas justice system.”

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $10, with a limited number of free tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tickets and additional information are available through the Grayson County Democratic Party website.
