1996 RED RIVER VALLEY ARTS FESTIVAL UNDERWAY
Tina O’Steen, Chairperson for the Arts Festival, is proud to announce the 1996 theme, “Seek the Unique,” scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21. The Arts Festival Committee is busily preparing in all different areas of this event, bringing back favorite attractions and adding new events as well.
One exciting announcement is in the area of entertainment. Tommy Loy and his Dixieland Band will be performing late in the afternoon from the Oliver Dewey Mayor stage. Direct from stages around the world, this native son will be bringing his band back home for a 3-hour stint, beginning at 4 p.m.
As in years past, the scope of events will be huge and the offerings many. Included will be: Annual 5K and Mini-K Runs, Teddy Bear Parade, opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. to the sound of the Sherman High School Bearcat Band, Domino Tournament, Adult Art Show and Judging, Youth Art Show, Pancake Breakfast, continual entertainment on the several stages, Friends of the Library Book Sale, puppet shows and more.
And of course, the hand-made, original crafts will be lined up and down the lawn in booths full of delightful items for your house, yard, gift list and closet!
This annual day of Autumn fun promises to provide plenty of unique attractions for any taste.

WHITEWRIGHT SCHOOLS RATED AMONG TOPS IN THE STATE BY TEA
On August 1, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) notified Superintendent Sandra Hill of the official state ratings of each of the Whitewright campuses and the district. The ratings were: High School - Exemplary, Middle School - Recognized, Elementary School - Recgonized, District - Recognized
This places the High School in an elite group of only 2% of the high schools in Texas. The Middle School ranks in the top 15% of the 1,247 middle schools in Texas and the Elementary School ranks in the top 22% of the 3,564 elementary schools in Texas. The total district rating for Whitewright was Recognized which earns a ranking in the top 20% of the 1,044 districts in Texas.
CUB SCOUTS RACE FOR THE GOLD
Not even the Olympics could compare to the annual Cub Scout Cubmobile race. Racers zoomed off a 16 foot long ramp in home-built cars designed and built by the boys and their families.
There were very few mechanical problems which made this one of the fastest races ever held.
Every race had a close finish and spectators cheered for their favorite racer.
