Members of Keep Whitesboro Beautiful (KWB) hosted a successful summer social – Beach Party Picnic – on July 9 at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church Wesley Hall. Members and guests gathered to celebrate accomplishments and learn about the organization.

Patricia Davis, event chairman, stated that all of Whitesboro was invited. The room was decorated with tropical beach décor. Upon arrival, attendees were given a colorful lei, and their names were put in a beach bag for a chance to win a door prize. Picnic-style foods were served, and there were several photo op areas with props available.

Davis welcomed members and guests to the Beach Party Picnic. Then President Mark Wennstedt began the evening by describing some of KWB’s projects and upcoming events. He then offered a prayer before the meal.

Guests enjoyed several types of sandwiches, chips and dips, fruits, vegetables and desserts. Dinner was followed by several games of Beach Bingo with prizes ranging from beach towels to sunscreen. Later, members and guests played a game of Beach Trivia. Each table was a team and had its own buzzer. The first table to press their buzzer was able to answer. The team with the most points at the end of the game was the winner and received a beautifully decorated beach-themed sugar cookie. Davis stated she wanted the attendees to just come and have a good time, so she didn’t ask any businesses for a prize or donation. Everything (food, decorations and prizes) was donated by club members.
Finally, instead of the Beach Boys singing their famous song, Kokomo, the Beach Babes sang their song, Whitesboro. Performers wearing tropical shirts and leis sang their version of the song, while a PowerPoint presentation played in the background depicting all the businesses and famous spots in Whitesboro, such as the water tower, Trollinger Park, Cook’s Mercantile, 56 Deli and the Rodeo.

Davis said she spent several days taking photos of the businesses and putting them into the PowerPoint. She spent weeks getting the song exactly right for Whitesboro, and then had it prerecorded by two local singer-teachers to add to the PowerPoint.

Past KWB projects were remembered, such as the Trollinger Park clean-up, the Adopt-a-Highway clean-up and the grant that was won. Upcoming events announced were the annual Peanut Festival, where KWB will have a booth, and the annual Keep Whitesboro Beautiful Downtown Christmas, where KWB will have lots of family activities including horse-drawn carriage rides, a parade, vendors and Santa.

Membership applications were available at the sign-in table and are available on the club’s website. Membership dues, which are paid annually in January, are now 50% off.
