The Collinsville Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Harold Colson as Interim Superintendent following the resignation of former Superintendent Matthew Davenport, who tendered his resignation during the June 8 school board meeting.

Colson brings more than 30 years of experience in education to the position. A former college basketball player, he began his career as a teacher and basketball coach, serving in larger school districts including Grand Prairie, Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB) and Denton. After coaching at Denton High School, he transitioned into administration, accepting an assistant principal position in Bridgeport.

Following about six years in Bridgeport, Colson became Athletic Director at Bonham ISD, where he served for several years before joining Pilot Point ISD as
Assistant Superintendent. His role later evolved into Deputy Superintendent, where he helped guide the district through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also served as Interim Superintendent before retiring from public education.

“It was the move to Pilot Point that brought me closer to this area,” Colson said. “I really like these smaller towns.”

Retirement, however, did not mark the end of his career. Colson discovered he enjoyed serving as an interim superintendent and decided to pursue those opportunities full-time. Working with educational search firms, he became part of a pool of experienced administrators recommended to districts seeking interim leadership.

That process ultimately led him to Collinsville. The board appointed Colson during its June 15 meeting, and he has already begun serving in the role.

“The board is still working through the particulars, like when they’ll post the opening for the permanent position,” Colson said. “Nothing is set in stone yet. My role is to be here, support the board in any way they need, help the district navigate this transition and prepare for the coming school year.”

While leadership changes can create uncertainty, Colson expressed confidence in the district’s future.

“All positions have been hired. All staff is in place,” he said. “Collinsville is a great district. Whoever ultimately gets the job will be coming into a very positive situation. Last year was a great academic year. The district continues to receive strong ratings and is showing improvement in many areas. Athletics are doing exceptionally well. While budgeting can be a challenge for many districts, Collinsville is in a strong financial position heading into next year. There are a lot of positives here and a lot of enthusiasm. I’m very excited for the next person who comes in.”

As optimistic as he is about the coming year, Colson will not be pursuing the full-time role.

“I really enjoy serving as an interim superintendent, helping districts when they need me and answering the call when it comes,” he said.

Colson holds a Doctor of Education degree from Northcentral University and a Master of Science degree from Texas A&M University–Kingsville. He also maintains Superintendent and Principal certifications in the State of Texas.

Known for his collaborative leadership style, commitment to transparency and dedication to building positive relationships with students, staff, families and community members, Colson said his focus as Interim Superintendent is to support Collinsville ISD’s students and staff while ensuring stability, continuity and a strong foundation for the future.
