Tioga High School junior Mackenzie Lewter won a UIL Gold Medal Monday in The Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition. She placed first statewide in combined classes 1A-3A. Lewter’s essay “A Story and Identity No Colonizer Can Tear” is about Collinsville High School graduate Carrie Johnson. See page page 8 to read the essay and read more about Lewter’s efforts in next week’s edition of the News-Record. As of press time, many other local students were set to compete at State UIL.
