The West Grayson Retired School Personnel Association (WGRSPA) has been awarding scholarships to area students for at least 18 years and is now accepting scholarship applications for five awards this year.
Three of the scholarships are offered to encourage and assist deserving students pursuing a career in education.
This year, three education scholarships of $500 each will be awarded, one of those being the Joe Bertino Memorial Scholarship funded by the Bertino family in honor of his many years of service as the agriculture teacher at Whitesboro High School.
Applicants for these awards must have graduated from Collinsville ISD, S&S CISD, Tioga ISD or Whitesboro ISD; must be at a junior or senior level in college (60 hours completed); and be majoring in education with a commitment to enter the teaching field.
Graduate students, including current teachers, taking courses in education or working toward an advanced education degree or certification are also encouraged to apply.
A fourth award, the Deloris Bertino Memorial Nursing Scholarship, is also $500 and is to be given to a current college student who has been accepted into a nursing program. Applicants must have graduated from one of the four local west Grayson County high schools.
The Bertino family also funds this scholarship to honor their mother’s dedication to the field of nursing and her years of service as the school nurse for Whitesboro ISD.
Finally, the Curtis Anne Kinsfather Memorial Scholarship is funded by the WGRSPA in honor of her leadership and example as a longtime member, her passion for life and helping students prepare to enter the workforce.
This $500 award will be presented to a senior graduating from Whitesboro High School who needs financial assistance to be able to attend college or other career training programs.
