After a particularly stressful week, I sensed the Lord speak the following words to me:
“You are forfeiting your peace, handing it over carelessly like a piece of gum, to be chewed until the flavor is gone and then thrown away.
“You blame the enemy for stealing your peace. He is the lawless one, but he has no authority over you to take what is My fruit in your life.
“You think your circumstances determine your opportunity and capacity for peace like a child’s birthday party creates an atmosphere of joy. That’s your responsibility – to set the atmosphere. Don’t be blaming outside influences for your own spiritual laziness!
“Now get up and walk in peace.”
Yikes! I think I just got a ‘good talkin’ to! The truth of these words quickly sank in to reveal that my peace should not be available for sale nor theft. My peace is my responsibility.
Jesus told His disciples that He was giving them His peace (John 14:27). If He can give it, I can surely receive it! Peace is also evidence of His presence operating in our lives (Gal. 5:22).
But the wisdom of Solomon goes a step further and advises us to plan for peace! “... those who plan peace have joy.” (Prov. 12:20b ESV) I’ve got to start planning for peace! I do this in my heart and mind and by making the choice to expect the peace of God. I must make conscious decisions to reject strife and pursue peace. I can set myself up for peace.
Thanks be to Jesus, who came to bring us abundant life and gives us His peace: peace with God and peace in life. We look for it, and we promote it as we receive His gift. We change our thinking and plan for peace!
“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” -- John 14:27 NLT
“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way.” -- 2 Thessalonians 3:16 ESV
