The Whitesboro Police Department issued a warning to citizens last week about a new scam that is currently underway in the area.
According to a notice issued by Police Chief Kevin Dockery on Jan. 21, City Hall has received numerous calls reporting that residents are being contacted by individuals claiming to represent Oncor and stating there are outstanding electric balances that must be paid immediately to avoid service disconnection.
Dockery confirmed these calls are scams as Oncor does not provide service within Whitesboro City Limits. Residents who receive these calls should:
- Hang up immediately
- Do not provide personal or financial information
- Do not make any payments
- Report the call to Oncor directly and, if appropriate, local law enforcement
Residents are reminded to only verify account information by contacting their utility provider directly using the phone number listed on their official bill or the company’s official website.
The City of Whitesboro urges residents to stay alert for scams that often increase during severe weather events. Please direct questions to Chief Dockery at [email protected]
