CISD cuts ties with baseball coach Jenkins

CISD cuts ties with baseball coach Jenkins

Collinsville ISD, Monday night, approved the notice proposing termination for head baseball coach Derrick Jenkins who has been on administrative leave since October due to alleged inappropriate communication between Jenkins and a Collinsville ISD student.

At that time, CISD superintendent Matthew Davenport said, in a statement, that the school immediately contacted the Collinsville Police Department, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the Texas Education Agency State Board for Educator Certification and began an investigation.

Jenkins was barred from district property at that point and has been on paid leave ever since.

On Dec. 8, the Collinsville Police Department issued a press release saying the investigation remained active citing hundreds of hours spent on the case in partnership with the Texas Rangers, the Grayson County Children’s Advocacy Group and the Grayson County District Attorney’s Office.

Collinsville Police Chief Jeff Ashabranner confirmed Tuesday that the case is still open though no arrests have been made.

“This investigation is still ongoing,” Ashabranner said. “As such, I can’t comment on the details at this time, but it is still an open and active investigation.”

Davenport said Collinsville has elevated assistant coach Christian Smith to lead the Pirate baseball program for the upcoming season that starts on Feb. 16.

Smith is in his fourth year as an assistant at CHS.

Jenkins led the program to the state tournament the past three years in a row.

They won back-to-back championships the past two seasons after coming up short in the semi-final game in 2023.

Jenkins has 458 career wins and has had seven teams advance to State.

He took both Whitehouse and White Oak to the final four twice before landing at Collinsville.

His time in Collinsville was not without controversy prior to the current allegations.

Jenkins missed the first 10 games of the 2024 season as part of the punishment from the UIL State Executive Committee after he was ejected from a game while on probation for the second time during the 2023 season and third time over the course of a calendar year.

The UIL upheld the initial suspension by CISD that included a public reprimand and additional training.

Each of these incidences involved Jenkins’ gametime behavior and treatment of umpires.

In fact, he was relegated to the bleachers for the 2023 State Semi-Final game and was required to spend the ensuing season in the dugout.
