West Grayson Retired School Personnel Association (WGRSPA) celebrated the season with a luncheon on Dec. 2 at First United Church Wesley Hall. Twenty-two members and a number of special guests enjoyed a covered dish luncheon prepared by members. The S&S ensemble choir presented Christmas music a cappella under the direction of Angela Russell, choir director at S&S schools.
WGRSPA President Sue Barker recognized guest Mark Fletcher who was presented a certificate of appreciation for the use of his shop for the past years as the Pumpkin Painting workshop; Brookshire Brothers Grocery for their support in supplying pumpkins and their donations, which help offset the cost to the organization; and the Whitesboro News-Record for publication of articles highlighting the activities of WGRSPA.
Additional guests included Precinct 4 County Commissioner Matt Hardenburg and superintendents of the districts included in West Grayson RSPA. Ryan Harper (Whitesboro ISD), Jeff Russell (S&S Consolidated ISD), Josh Ballinger (Tioga ISD) and Matthew Davenport (Collinsville ISD) each reported on enrollments for the year, staff activities and facilities.
STAAR test scores showed improvements from the previous year in all four districts. Each commented on the increased challenges for public schools with the passage of legislation for private schools to receive public funding. Harper reported on the building projects underway at WISD. Each district superintendent noted long-range planning that is being done to prepare for the increase in population that is expected in the near future in their districts.
Superintendents were presented $200 for each of their respective high school and middle school libraries, one of the ways WGRSPA uses funds possible from the Pumpkin Painting Project.
