Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is beginning to see the arrival of Snow Geese and Ross’s Geese. While only about 1,500 have shown up so far, the refuge is expecting numbers to reach 6,000-7,000 in just a few short weeks.
Therefore, on Dec. 20 at 7 a.m., the Friends of Hagerman will hold its Christmas Bird Count event. Observers of any skill level are welcome to join and help count all the birds they can detect in a 15-mile radius centered on Cooks Corner Road.
Participants should meet at Hagerman NWR headquarters (6465 Refuge Road in Sherman) at 7 a.m. Observers can participate for a half-day or the whole day. A meal will be served at the refuge at 5 p.m. For those with home feeders, connect to the webpage with details on how you can participate.
Registration is requested for meal planning for those participating at the refuge. (friendsofhagerman.org/Christmas)
