Whitesboro residents received a mailer this week explaining the city’s plans for a water replacement project in town.

The city has contracted with Performance Services to install residential and commercial water meters with an automatic (smart) meter reading system. Replacing these meters, which are used to measure the amount of water delivered to users, will ensure the city can accurately track water usage while reducing maintenance work.

In addition to providing more accurate, efficient meter reading and water billing; conserving water; identifying continuous usage; and setting up custom alerts, the project will also include an online customer portal. This will allow customers to gain a deeper understanding of how and when they use water. (According to the city, more information about accessing this portal will be shared post-installation.)

The city says there is no charge for the new meters. As far as whether customers can expect an increase in their water bills, the city’s old meters may have been running slower and not accurately measure the water going through them. Depending on the age and accuracy of citizens’ existing water meters or undetected leaks, residents might see a higher bill due to the accuracy of the new meters. They will simply record consumption more accurately.

Residents can expect a temporary service interruption while the meter is replaced, but it shouldn’t last more than 30 minutes. A project representative will notify each resident prior to the installation of the new meter. (Residents do not need to be home for the meter replacement.) Work crews will wear identification badges and carry a letter explaining why they are in the neighborhood.

The City of Whitesboro is looking forward to offering this new technology to its residents. Please direct questions to 903-564-3311 or email [email protected]
