After a distinguished career spanning 38 years, Dr. Bhupinder (Bill) Khaira has announced his retirement from medical practice, effective Oct. 31. Dr. Khaira has been a beloved and respected figure in the Gainesville medical community, touching countless lives with his expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient care.

After moving to Gainesville from Michigan with his wife, Bunny, in 1987, Dr. Khaira began working as a general surgeon at Gainesville Memorial Hospital.

“Bunny had gone to college in Dallas and her parents lived in Dallas, so we wanted to move closer,” he said. “We were looking around at places and Gainesville at that time was looking for a general surgeon. We stopped in Gainesville, looked at the hospital, liked it, and the rest is history.

“I’ve lived in this town for so long,” he added. “We thought we would come in for a couple of years and see how it is and then move on. Staying in one place for that many years, we had no idea we would do that.”

Throughout his career, Dr. Khaira has consistently demonstrated a dedication to advancing medical knowledge and providing the highest standard of care.

“What I was trained to do was to help people and take care of them,” Dr. Khaira said. “I had a set of skills and I was able to put those to use in Gainesville. When I was leaving my residency, one of my old professors was retiring. He said to me, ‘you know when you go into practice, you need to have the three A’s. Those are affability, availability and ability.’ So I’ve always tried to practice by those three A’s.”

Dr. Khaira had a private practice in Gainesville until 2017 when he joined the staff of North Texas Medical Center. His office on Grand Avenue became the NTMC Health Surgical Specialists of North Texas clinic.

“We always had excellent employees that were always hard working, willing to learn, honest and loyal,” Dr. Khaira said. “And I can’t talk enough about the OR staff. We’ve had excellent relationships with the OR staff. They always made sure I got what I needed. I’ve always had a good relationship with all the staff at the hospital. I’ve never had any issues.”

In 2024, Dr. Leah Dill joined Dr. Khaira at his clinic. Dr. Dill will follow in the footsteps of Dr. Khaira and will provide excellent care to the residents of Cooke County and surrounding areas. Dr. Dill is also a board-certified general surgeon with expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery, upper and lower endoscopy, hernia repair, colon resection and gallbladder surgery.

So what does Dr. Khaira plan to do in retirement?

“Well what all retirees do … go fish, go play golf, go ride motorcycles, play with the grandchildren, work in the garden, mow the yard, and do honey-dos.”
