WHITESBORO HOSTS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT APPRECIATION DAY
It started a few years ago with just a spark of an idea, and it took two years to grow into a flame, finally materializing this past Saturday as Whitesboro Mayor W.D. “Dee” Welch made it official dubbing the event “Whitesboro Volunteer Fire Department Appreciation Day.”
Two years ago, Randy Henderson, owner of the Old World Meat Market on Main Street in Whitesboro, dreamed up the idea of a way to honor these brave volunteers.
Henderson joined alderman Dale Thomas in planning the celebration together with the end goal of expressing the thanks of the community for the volunteer department and its members.
Whitesboro firefighters and their families enjoyed a meal during the event at Godwin Park.

CHRISTMAS DRAWINGS BEGIN NOV. 27
The Whitesboro Chamber of Commerce will be awarding $375 to 20 persons during their annual Christmas drawings according to the approved proposal submitted to a three-member promotion committee.
Directors of the chamber met Tuesday afternoon to hear the proposal and unanimously approved it.
This year, a total of $375 will be given away in gift certificates which are redeemable at any participating merchants store.
Last year, there were more than 33 merchants participating, and those participating this year will be announced later in the News-
Record.
Each certificate will be valued at one dollar.
The prize money will be awarded to 20 persons - if no one wins more than one time - in 20 different drawings on five Saturday afternoons.
Each Saturday afternoon, beginning Nov. 27 through Dec. 24, four drawings will be held.
Certificates in the amount of $10, $15, $20 and $25 will be awarded on each afternoon,
Coupons for the drawing may be obtained from the participating merchants beginning Nov. 20.
The drawings will be held each scheduled Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
This year’s drawings will differ from past promotions in that tickets will be drawn from the hopper until a winner is named. Participants must be present in order to win.
Tentative plans discussed by the committee and directors were directed toward holding the affair in the parking lot of the Security National Bank. However, no definite site has been selected.
Members of the promotion committee included Leon Rogers, chairman, Gladys Judd and Willard Judd.
