The true cost of freedom

We stand here today, united in honor, appreciation, recognition and respect for those who have worn the uniform and served our nation. Veteran’s Day prompts us to reflect and acknowledge the profound debt we owe to those who have served.

Throughout our nation’s history, in times of war and peace, our veterans have stood firm against those who would threaten our way of life. From the frozen forests and battlefields of WWI and WWII, the bombing at Pearl Harbor by Japan, the battle in the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, to the sweltering jungles of Vietnam, from the mountains and deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, our service members have faced adversity with courage and determination.

Our veterans go far beyond the battlefield. They represent the foundational principles and values for which our great nation stands for. They are everyday Americans who are our family members, our children, friends and neighbors who have the desire and yield to the call of duty. They bring the values of duty, honor and sacrifice into our everyday lives which is implanted in their hearts by God our creator. They teach the next generation these principles, values and freedom lives on.

And to all who have served, in whatever capacity, your commitment to our nation did not end when you hung up your uniform. It is evident the American dream is still utmost in your heart as you serve communities as leaders, volunteers and counselors and advisers to our youth. You represent the absolute best of what it means to be an American.

But as we express our gratitude, we must also recognize that many of our veterans face significant challenges. With the hurt of troubled minds some have become heartbroken; anxiety and depression have become a mental struggle. Post-traumatic distress, physical disabilities, Agent Orange contamination, cancer riddled bodies, unemployment and homelessness affect far too many who have served. On this Veteran’s Day, let us renew our commitment to supporting in love, as well as in word, to those who are hurting.

Let us also commit to preserving the stories of our veterans for future generations. Each veteran’s experience is a valuable asset in our nation’s history. When we listen to their stories and experiences, we begin to understand the true cost of our freedom that is never forgotten. This is the “Beginning and Passing” to the next generation, their vision of freedom that has made America great.

As we reflect on this special day, we may have a renewed sense of gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy and a deeper understanding of the price at which they were bought. Let us honor our veterans not just with words but with action and demonstrate our commitment to their well-being.

To all who have put their lives on the line in defense of our flag, Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard, for this new idea called Freedom, we honor you and say THANK YOU.

God Bless all our veterans, and God Bless the United States of America.
