Area veterans were showered with appreciation this week at a Veteran’s Day concert performed ahead of a special event scheduled for Monday morning.
Thursday night, Nov. 6, Whitesboro Intermediate School (WIS) fourth graders presented a Veteran’s Day concert for veterans, friends and family members. Held in the WIS cafeteria, students were dressed in red, white and blue as they performed a series of songs celebrating members of the Armed Forces and American patriotism in general.
Divided into two performances, half of the grade sang at 5 p.m. and the other half sang at 7 p.m. During the concert, a slideshow featuring photographs of veterans who are related to the performers was shown on a large screen.
The concert was the precursor to a special event just for veterans to be hosted by the Whitesboro High School (WHS) Fine Arts Department on Monday morning, Nov. 10.
The Veteran’s Day Celebration is open to all veterans in the community. Guests do not need to have a student enrolled in Whitesboro ISD to attend.
This district-wide program will begin at 8:15 a.m. with breakfast at WIS. From there, veterans will ride with WISD personnel and be paraded past Hayes Primary School (HPS) and Whitesboro Middle School (WMS) to WHS for an hour-long celebration beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The program, which will be held in the gymnasium with the high school student body, will feature the students of the WHS Fine Arts Department. Art students created the artwork in the program; the band is performing the National Anthem; all WISD choirs are singing; and the theatre students will perform readings throughout the event that honor the veterans.
The celebration, which will be emceed by WHS senior Mason Pierson, will also include presentations from various students and faculty of WISD. The WIS and WMS Student Councils will lead the Pledge of Allegiance; HPS second graders Harlowe Fletcher and Savannah Park will read “They Did Their Share” by Joanna Fuchs; a selection of fourth graders will sing an encore performance from Thursday’s concert; and WISD Police Chief Aaron Scott (USMC) will address the crowd; among other features.
This annual event is a favorite among veterans in the community.
