Postponed a day due to rain, Whitesboro’s new water tower tank was raised last Sunday morning before a crowd of onlookers.
The new one-million-gallon water tower is a project that has been in the works for years.
The city’s current water tower, built in 1965 and located at Godwin Park, holds 250,000 gallons of water and is near capacity.
In 2021, Whitesboro citizens voted to approve the expenditure of WEDCO/WIDCO sales tax funds for the construction of a new water tower.
In 2023, the City Council increased the project’s priority and directed the City Administrator to secure the needed easements to move forward with construction.
Then, in January of this year, the current City Council awarded $7.2 million to begin construction of the new elevated water tower.
The City held a groundbreaking ceremony at the tower’s site west of town on March 26. In April, the foundation was poured. Since then, residents have watched the project move
forward, both in person and online through live camera coverage found on the City’s website.
For months, workers have been building the tower from the ground up. Earlier this month, the city and school district logos were painted on the sides of the tank.
Now that the tank has been lifted, the tower can be seen from miles away and is an important addition to the community.
“I’m proud of this milestone for our citizens and the future of our city,” City Administrator Phil Harris said.
Project completion is expected around April 2026.
