First United Methodist serves up more than BBQ

First United Methodist serves up more than BBQ
The dessert table alone is worth the price of admission to the FUMC BBQ lunch on Peanut Festival Saturday.

First United Methodist Church (FUMC) will continue its popular BBQ lunch tradition at the Whitesboro Peanut Festival on Oct. 18, keeping it tasty and accessible.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., festivalgoers can enjoy a barbecue lunch featuring a choice of brisket, pulled pork and sausage for just $10.

This affordable meal offering is part of First United Methodist’s broader mission to serve the community, particularly young families who may find typical festival food prices prohibitive. In 2023, they lowered the cost as a tangible expression of their theology of grace, rooted in the Methodist tradition.

“We believe that just as God’s grace is freely given, our hospitality should reflect that same generosity,” Senior Pastor Dana Coker said. “Offering a meal that’s accessible to everyone is a small way of living out that grace in our community.”

Last year, FUMC served over 400 lunches at the Peanut Festival, and the church hopes to match or exceed that number this year.

“We want people to feel welcomed and valued, regardless of their situation,” Coker said. “It’s about extending grace in a way that’s real and meaningful.”

FUMC’s BBQ lunch not only offers a taste of good food but also a glimpse into the church’s broader mission of grace and service. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting Bob “The Clock Man” Hergesheimer at 903-814-3238 or the FUMC office at 903-564-3546.

Whether it’s through a simple meal or a warm welcome, First United Methodist aims to reflect the inclusive and grace-filled nature of the United Methodist Church at this year’s Whitesboro Peanut Festival.
