Last Tuesday morning, Sept. 29, the Whitesboro Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recognized longtime Type B Board President Mike Haynie for his years of service. Haynie, who has held the position since at least 2010, has now assumed the role of vice president of the board. Board member Craig Falco will now serve as Type B President.
Falco presented Haynie with a plaque and words of gratitude and praise for all of the time Haynie has devoted to the organization.
“It’s been a pleasure,” Haynie said.
Also at this regular scheduled meeting, the Type A (Industrial) Board approved payable and financial statements, understanding that because the EDC is not on the city network for IT Security back-up, the board has had to purchase external hard drives and a separate computer to maintain back-up.
The Type A board also agreed to roll-over the same officers from the previous term, with Jon Weems continuing to serve as president and Ken Kniss to continue serving as vice president.
Meanwhile, the Type B (economic) board nominated and approved Falco to serve as president and Haynie to serve as vice president.
The Type B board also approved an estimate from DevCo to restripe the parking lot at the Whitesboro post office, which is city property. The total fee is $1,765 and the work is expected to be completed before Peanut Festival.
Both boards received updates to ongoing projects from City Administrator Phil Harris. The new water tower has been painted with the city logo; next will be to add the golden ‘W’ logo used by the school district. Crews plan to raise the bowl in October, and the entire project is expected to be completed in April 2026. The city is now working on bids for the pipeline to run to the tower on the Hwy. 56 and Hwy. 82 sides.
The Planning and Zoning board has approved the Comprehensive Plan ordered by the EDC. On Oct. 21, the city will hold a public hearing and take action on moving forward with those plans.
Hughes Lumber, a new business being built on Locust Street, has secured their certificate of occupancy and only needs to provide the number of employees they expect to have.
The meeting ended with both boards entering into Executive Session to discuss the hiring of a new Executive Director and returning to open session with no action taken.
