Every Halloween, hundreds of children are drawn to downtown Whitesboro to enjoy the annual tradition of Trunks and Tailgates with Treats.
This trunk-or-treat event takes place each Halloween night and features decorated vehicles parked along Main Street, where costumed volunteers pass out candy to excited attendees. Vehicle decorating takes place from 5-6 p.m. and candy is distributed from 6-7:30 p.m. At 7:45 p.m., awards are given for the best decorated vehicle as well as best costume in three age categories: under six; seven to 12; and 13 and older.
The event, which has become a holiday tradition for many local families, is coordinated by Whitesboro local David “Happy Dave” Blaylock. More than 10 years ago, Blaylock and friend Paul Perry created the event as a way to do something fun for the kids in the community. Blaylock and Perry, both car enthusiasts, called up some friends and they put on a car show where they would also pass out Halloween candy to kids. Now, the event has become the must-attend Halloween event in town.
As the trunk-or-treat’s popularity grows each year, so does the need for help. Anyone able to enter their vehicle to pass out candy or who can donate candy to the cause should reach out to Blaylock on Facebook.
A planning meeting will be held early this month to coordinate efforts. Watch Facebook for updates.
