C’VILLE MAN USES UNRENTED HOUSES TO SHELTER KATRINA VICTIMS
Danny Riddle, a Collinsville resident, was one of many who watched with horror as the tale of Hurricane Katrina unfolded across television sets across America and the world.
Riddle had a couple of old rent houses he was in the process of renovating in Pilot Point. The bigger home was nearly done but the other one still needed a lot of work.
He drove to Reunion Arena to visit with victims and met with a family of 10 from Houma, Louisiana that accepted his proposal. What originally started as a family of 10 with two more coming late the next week and six more yet to come.
Later, the First Baptist Church helped get the children clothes and by 7 p.m. that night, church members had banded together to completely furnish the home with toys for the kids, furniture, pots and pans and even a pantry/refrigerator full of food.
While being bused out of New Orleans, the family became separated from one another. The other half of the family was located in Nashville, Tennessee, where they had been air lifted.
Those members were set to arrive in town after a total stranger, overhearing their conversation with Riddle, bought them bus tickets.
“I just can’t believe how people have come together,” Riddle said.
