Last Thursday and Friday, students at Hayes Primary and Whitesboro Intermediate Schools enjoyed lunch with family, staff and volunteers during the annual Grandparents’ Day Lunches at both campuses.
For two days (Sept. 4 and 5), the schools welcomed visitors for a special lunch consisting of chicken spaghetti or spaghetti with meat sauce, green beans, salad, cake and tea or water. All lunch plates were $5 for each person who attended, unless visitors were Veterans, in which case they were treated to a free meal.
Guest meals were distributed from a separate lunch line and were served by school district food service workers and administration, including Assistant Superintendent Ryan Prock and Superintendent Ryan Harper.
For children whose family was unable to attend, school staff and volunteers from the Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) were available to sit with students and ensure everyone felt included in the fun.
The events were well-attended both days at both campuses. In fact, the event saw its highest attendance since its inception.
On Thursday, the WISD Food Service team served 250 adults at the primary school and 200 adults at the intermediate school. On Friday, they served 170 adults at Hayes and around 150 adults at the Intermediate School.
It’s a lot of work, but worth it.
“They really enjoy these special days,” WISD Food Service Director/Catering Director Sheila Johnston said.
