STUDENTS’ WISH TAKES FORM OF CHRISTMAS TREE
An evergreen tree, decorated with colorfully numbered construction paper buses and school houses, was erected outside the new library facility at Whitesboro Junior High School.
A wish list of 35 items, ranging from low cost to those requiring substantial funds, were written on a simulated paper scroll on the tree.
“Some items, such as landscaping and grass, will definitely be handled. Others, such as computers, are part of the ongoing technology program. Then, many are simply not within budget allowances,” Principal Dr. Jan Lawrence said.
She hopes that a bit of community support, both physically and financially, will allow the goals to be met.
MOVE-IN POSTPONED FOR NEW COLLINSVILLE SCHOOL
Missing the targeted move-in date at Collinsville High School is less important, officials said, than housing students in an incomplete facility.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry said, “Yes, we are probably looking at a week or two later than we’d hoped, but our main concern is that everything is completely finished. We thought we’d be done by late September, but realistically, we’re looking more at the first week of October.”
Early construction efforts, slowed by unanticipated rains, pushed the project behind schedule.
Meanwhile, the district is using every inch of available space on its single campus to conduct classes. Enrollment shows 175 students in pre-kindergarten through grade four; 75 youngsters in grades five and six and another 206 students in seven through 12.
When finally opened, students in 7-12 will re-locate to their first-ever separate campus. Pre-kindergarten through four will be housed in the current elementary building, and grades five and six will be situated in the previous high school classrooms.

OVERCROWDED BUSES GET TRUSTEES ATTENTION
A transportation problem was spelled out Tuesday night during the Whitesboro Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting when Superintendent of Schools Jerry Dickson reported that some of the district’s seven bus routes were overcrowded.
“We may be looking at creating Bus Route Number Eight,” said Dickson, after noting that several buses are so packed that some children cannot be seated in an individual seat.
While all buses are crowded, two routes have 72 and 73 students on a 71-passenger bus.
Dickson said a student must live two miles from the school they attend before they can ride the bus. Or, if the student lives nearer but must cross a major highway where no crosswalk or protection is provided, the student can ride the bus.
The trustees, who noted they were fully aware of the existing problem, took no action.
S&S HAS NEW BUILDINGS, BUT GROWTH HAS OFFICIALS THINKING
The 1985-86 school year opened with pride this year for the Sadler-Southmayd Consolidated Independent School District (S&S) with the construction of a new administration building and a new middle school, but a high growth rate is forcing school officials to begin thinking about the construction of yet another school within several years.
“Enrollment is up nine percent compared to this time last year,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael “Mick” Stevens. He noted that last year at this time, 556 students were enrolled. This year, however, 606 students are enrolled in grades K-12.
To help accommodate the growth rate, an 11,000-12,000 square foot middle school just opened to accept grades six through eight, as well as fourth grade which is located on the east end of the new facility to allow for the overflow from the elementary building.
When asked if the district has already outgrown the middle school, which opened only nine days ago, Stevens said, “We’re full today.”
