Pirates keep ‘Battle of the Bridge’ bragging rights
A close game at halftime turned to Collinsville favor and the Pirates downed Tioga 36-20 at home Thursday, Aug. 28.
The Pirates trailed 8-7 at the intermission and coach Garrett Patterson said some attitudes needed to change.
“We didn’t have any adjustments per se,” Patterson said. “There was a whole lot of fighting and bickering amongst the teammates in the first half. We came in and fixed it at halftime and they played together in the second half.”
Patterson said it wasn’t first week jitters for the number seven ranked team in the state, it was more about learning new jobs on the field in game one.
“We lost Garrett Trevino last year. And Cash Morgan— some of our biggest leaders,” Patterson said, “So, we don’t know who our leaders are and we don’t know who to listen to. When somebody is trying to establish themselves (as a leader)— sometimes you get into a little squabble match, and it was happening a lot during the game.”
But the Pirates regrouped and eventually reached the end zone on four of their final six possessions.
Paxton Davidson led the attack with four catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
