The community is in for a musical treat as the Whitesboro Community Jazz Ensemble’s (WCJE) debut concert is Tuesday, Sept.  9, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Whitesboro. This brand-new jazz ensemble, made up of talented local musicians, is stepping into the spotlight after months of preparation. Having spent the summer rehearsing, refining and discovering their unique sound, the group is ready to deliver a performance that promises to delight music lovers of all ages. We are offering an open invitation for the community to gather and soak in the vibrant spirit of jazz.

The audience can expect a concert filled with exciting arrangements of timeless jazz standards starting with “Birdland” (arr. Michael Sweeney)-- Weather Report’s jazz-fusion hit, bursting with energy, groove, and big band flair; “Night in Tunisia” (arr. Michael Sweeney)-- Dizzy Gillespie’s bebop masterpiece, brimming with Latin rhythms and bold brass accents; “My Funny Valentine” (arr. Mike Smukal)-- a tender, lyrical ballad that’s one of jazz’s most beloved love songs; “Take Five” (arr. Rich Derosa)-- Dave Brubeck’s cool jazz classic with its unforgettable 5/4 groove; “Sing, Sing, Sing” (arr. Victor Lopez)-- Benny Goodman’s big band anthem, full of driving swing and infectious energy; “Summertime” (arr. Dave Rivello)-- George Gershwin’s timeless melody, reimagined with soulful jazz colors. “Chameleon” (arr. Alan Baylock)-- Herbie Hancock’s funky, electric groove that gets audiences moving; and ending the concert with a swing-era favorite, “In the Mood” (arr. Michael Sweeney).  The concert will also include a vocal solo by Rebecca Meals.

“This concert is our way of giving back to the community; we’ve poured our hearts into this music all summer, and we can’t wait to share it,” Director Susie Meals said.

Whether you’re a lifelong lover of jazz or someone hearing these songs for the first time, this concert promises an evening of joy, energy and connection. Gather your friends, bring the family and come experience the debut of a new hometown tradition.

Ensemble members include Paul Terrell, Carol Golden, Darys Stone (trumpet); Cory Meals, Colby Meals, Jake Dickerson (trombone); Rebecca Meals, Brad Davis, Travis Davis (saxophone); Marilyn Meals (piano); Tyler Parson (bass guitar); Greg Smith (guitar); and Darrin Dutton and Bentley Meals (percussion).

The ensemble would like to thank the First United Methodist Church for hosting their rehearsals and concert.
