Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concerns about the proposed 1.5% sales tax for purchases made in the unincorporated areas of Grayson County, as reported by the news. While I understand the need for revenue to fund services for our growing community, I believe this proposal unfairly places the burden solely on rural residents.
Businesses in Sherman, TX, clearly benefit from the residents of unincorporated areas through their patronage, yet they seem unwilling to contribute to the financial support of the county’s infrastructure and services. A more equitable approach would be a modest increase in sales tax that applies countywide, ensuring that both urban and rural areas share in the responsibility of sustaining the county’s services.
This approach would not only ensure a more balanced distribution of the tax burden but also help keep businesses in rural areas competitive without negatively impacting their traffic. For these reasons, I am opposed to the current proposal in its current form and will be voting NO.
Thank you for considering my thoughts.
Sincerely,
Kym Losoya
