On Saturday, Aug. 9, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will host a Butterfly Garden Stroll from 9-11 a.m. Garden docents will be on hand to help identify the Texas native plants and visiting butterflies. Literature on butterflies and plants will be available, and special family-friendly events will include scavenger hunts, the Metamorphosis Puppet and more.

Registration is not necessary.

Also that day, the Friends of Hagerman will host their second Saturday program at 10 a.m.

“Dragonflies and Damselflies” will be presented by Dr. Wayne Meyer. Attendees will learn about the 5,000 species of dragonflies, their lifespans (which range from a few weeks to a year) and will enjoy a discussion about some of the ones that live at Hagerman NWR.

Lastly, after a summer of heavy rain that inhibited many of the Refuge’s activities and amenities, the tram tours are back in operation. Every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., guests can enjoy a 60- to 90-minute tour along Wildlife Drive at the Refuge. Enjoy learning about the history of the displaced town of Hagerman while watching for wildlife. There are lots of stops for birdwatching and photography. Reservations are required (visit www.friendsofhagerman.com/Tram-Tours); standbys are accepted if space permits. Tours are funded by donations and are therefore free and open to the public.
