Last Thursday, the City of Whitesboro announced it was currently monitoring a significant outbreak of distemper, particularly affecting cats and kittens in several neighborhoods.

According to the city, in recent weeks, numerous animals have been found in severe condition around Boston, Collinsville, North Jordan and Tipton Streets.

Distemper is a highly contagious virus that can infect a variety of animals, like dogs, cats, foxes, skunks and raccoons. It affects the skin and respiratory, gastrointestinal, immune and nervous systems of these animals and, while it has no cure, it can be prevented by vaccination.

Symptoms that infected animals may experience include:
• Crusty discharge sealing eyelids shut
• Aggression, disorientation, or lack of alertness
• Seizure-like movements of head and paws
• Aimless wandering
• Eye and nose discharge
• Labored breathing
• Neurological signs similar to rabies

While the risk of humans catching distemper is low, it’s best to take precautions to prevent the spread of this disease. Consider vaccinating your pets (it’s the best protection) and avoid leaving food or water outside that can attract sick or feral animals.

If you believe your pet may be infected or see signs of illness in the community, contact your veterinarian immediately. Please notify Animal Control if you have confirmed or suspected cases — this helps the city track and contain the spread. Call City Hall at 903-564-4000 or the After-Hours Non-Emergency line at 903-564-3585.
