More than 1,000 people were killed in DUI/alcohol-related crashes on Texas roads in 2024. That means three lives were lost every day on our roads last year because a Texas driver ignored the risks and chose to drink and drive.
With these alarming statistics in mind, and to highlight the real cost of impaired driving to the friends and family of those killed in crashes, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is launching its summer “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign across the Lone Star State.
Timed with the official start of summer and the Fourth of July holiday weekend, TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign is aligned with an increased law enforcement effort across our state to keep Texas roads safe.
From June 26 through July 13, officers will be on a heightened lookout for drunk drivers to reduce DUI crashes, injuries and fatalities across the state.
With its new campaign, TxDOT hopes to encourage Texans not to drink and drive over spring break (or any time), and to always choose a sober ride by designating a sober driver ahead of time, using rideshare services, taxis or mass transit, or simply staying put after drinking until you sober up. Beyond the possibility of taking a life – including your own – driving impaired and getting a DUI can result in time-consuming legal hassles and fines and fees up to $17,000.
“Making the choice to drive drunk instead of finding a sober ride home can and does lead to serious consequences,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said. “No one wants to live the rest of their life knowing they caused the death of another person on the road, and no one is impervious to the dangers of driving impaired.”
TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign and the traveling Faces of Drunk Driving video exhibit will showcase first-person testimonials from drunk-driving offenders and survivors. These emotional stories demonstrate the real, tangible consequences associated with drunk driving. It’s a vivid reminder that there’s a story behind every Texan on the road, but when people choose to drive drunk, those stories can be cut short.
“Drive Sober. No Regrets” is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan’s “Kind. Courteous. Safe” initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie, and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe.
