Each winter, thousands of Snow and Ross’s geese visit Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). These geese have migrated thousands of miles from nesting grounds near the Arctic Circle to the refuge.
To provide a vital food resource for these exhausted and hungry travelers, Hagerman NWR plants fields of winter wheat. The Friends of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge (FoH) is sponsoring the “Adopt a Goose” fundraiser to help offset budget constraints of the refuge and purchase the wheat seed needed to plant the fields.

Meanwhile, the July 5 ‘Little Sit’ program in which people learn to identify birds of North Texas, has been canceled. Early bird guided walks will resume in the fall.
The summer’s heavy rains have put a damper on several of Hagerman’s amenities. Public tram tours on Saturdays and Sundays have been canceled indefinitely, and hiking trails and major roads are closed due to flooding.
The July 12 Butterfly Garden Stroll (9-11 a.m.) and Mammals of Texoma presentation (10 a.m.) are still expected to take place.
