The Veterans Association of Whitesboro (VAW) has released a calendar of events and invites the community to join them for several opportunities in the coming months.

This newly-formed non-profit has been meeting monthly since August 2024 at Cook’s Main Stage in downtown Whitesboro on the third Thursday of the month (6-9 p.m.) to provide a place for Veterans and members of the community to gather and socialize. These Veterans Socials are free to attend and include coffee (provided by Iron Soldiers Coffee Company) and light refreshments, a kids’ table with children’s activities and cards and board games for adults.

In addition to these monthly gatherings, the organization will also be holding a few special events this year. On June 26 at Cook’s Main Stage, the VAW will host dinner and a movie. For $12, attendees can enjoy a meal catered by Tender Barbecue and watch a showing of “The Girl Who Wore Freedom,” a historical documentary that depicts how the French viewed the heroism of American soldiers during World War II. This event is sponsored by Home Helpers and the movie will be shown indoors on a 15-foot movie screen.
Over Labor Day weekend on Aug. 30, the VAW plans to host a festival/car show/motorcycle rally featuring military vehicles from 1970 or earlier. The plan is to include vendor booths and a bounce house for kids. Details are still being confirmed.

In lieu of its regularly scheduled monthly social, the Nov. 20 get-together will be an awards night with Bingo. The event will be held at First Baptist Church’s Christian Life Center from 6-9 p.m. The group will return to the church on Dec. 18 for a Christmas event from 6-9 p.m.

Anyone interested in supporting this organization might be interested in an upcoming “Dine to Donate” fundraiser with Texas Roadhouse in Sherman. On July 3 and July 17, 10% of any food purchases made between 3 and 10 p.m. will be donated back to the Veterans Association of Whitesboro.

Everyone is welcome to join the VAW at these community events. You do not have to be a Veteran to attend. To learn more, visit the VAW booth at the Peanut Festival in October or the downtown Christmas event in December, reach out to club president Keisha Head at 940-445-3729 or follow the group on Facebook.
