After a series of thefts in Whitesboro over the past few weeks, a suspect has been apprehended.
On May 27, Petty’s Tire and Service Center in Whitesboro reported a break-in, during which thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and a customer’s vehicle were stolen. Two days later, the Whitesboro Riding Club reported a break-in at their arena, during which equipment was stolen and buildings were destroyed. The following week, residents began experiencing property theft (including lawn mowers and weed eaters) at their homes.
Citizens began posting doorbell camera and security camera footage on social media that showed two men absconding with various items, which helped the Whitesboro Police Department (WPD) identify a suspect. The department then received a tip regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. Officers quickly followed up on the information, conducted an investigation and located the individual at a local RV park.
Late Friday night, Whitesboro police executed search warrants for Zachary Todd McEwan, a 27-year-old man from Blossom, Texas, with more than a dozen burglary and theft-related charges since 2019.
While it remains unclear whether he was responsible for the thefts at Petty’s or the riding arena (the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate), police alledge McEwan was involved in the residential burglaries.
The Lamar County man was arrested for suspicion of burglary of a building, deadly conduct by discharge of a firearm, theft of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. More charges may follow.
He was arrested without incident and booked into the Grayson County jail early Saturday morning where he is being held on a $35,000 bond.
The WPD is grateful to its citizens for posting security camera footage and working together to bring McEwan to justice.
“When people come together like that, it really helps us out,” Whitesboro Police Chief Kevin Dockery said. “We’re very grateful to our citizens for working together to help our city stay safe. After all, that’s our main goal.”
