BACK-TO-BACK

Pirates blank Overton to win 2nd State crown in a row
BACK-TO-BACK

For the second time in as many years, the Collinsville Pirates are State Champions.

The Pirates used timely hitting and solid defense and pitching to claim a 12-0 victory over Overton Thursday morning at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock. With the win, Collinsville (32-4) claimed the Class 2A-Division II State championship – a year after winning the final unified 2A State crown.

“It’s unreal. When the year started, we started off with the saying, ‘time will tell,’” said Derrick Jenkins, Collinsville baseball coach. “We started getting better and better every game.”

According to Jenkins, the Pirates are just the 22nd team to repeat as State Champions in UIL baseball history.

“I got a message the other day saying that only 21 teams have won back-to-back state titles. To be No. 22 is crazy,” Jenkins said. “This is unbelievable stuff. To do what we did last year and come back and do what we did this year is awesome.”

The Pirates scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Cash Morgan hit a two-run single before he and Garrett Trevino each scored on an error.

“Everything happened in the first inning like it was supposed to happen. We thought we could bunt and do some things to score some runs early,” Jenkins said. “We put up the four and kind of got a little selfish and took some big swings. But we put pressure on them, and that’s what we’ve been doing all year. We forced people to play from behind.”

The Mustangs (31-9) loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the first. But Trevino struck out the ensuing batter and Paxton Davidson, Jaxon Spivey and Morgan turned an inning-ending double play to keep Overton scoreless.

The Mustangs seemed primed to score in the bottom of the second with runners on the corners with one out. But Trevino threw a grounder to Morgan for the force-out at first before
Morgan fired a relay throw to catcher Peyton Davidson, who made the tag at home plate for the final out of the frame.

“We made great plays in the first three innings,” Jenkins said. “They had every chance to score, and we made great play after great play. The defense was unreal.”

The score remained 4-0 until the Pirates scored eight runs on six hits, four walks and a hit batsman in the top of the seventh. Jaxon Jenkins scored on a double-steal, Paxton Davidson hit an RBI double, Caysen Schafer and Noe Cantu drew consecutive bases-loaded walks, Brandon Cantu drew a bases-loaded walk, Paxton Davidson hit an RBI single and Jenkins hit a two-run single to cap the scoring.

“We settled down in the seventh and put up eight runs,” Jenkins said. “Once you go up 12-0, you start preparing for what it’s going to be like (celebration wise).”
Jenkins (3-4, 2 RBI) led Collinsville at the plate, while Paxton Davidson (2-5, 2B, RBI) also had multiple hits. Morgan (1-3, BB, RBI), Schafer (1-3, BB, RBI), Trevino (1-3) and Peyton Davison (1-4, BB, 2B, RBI) also contributed.

Trevino pitched the first four innings to earn the win. Schafer pitched the final three innings.

“We tried to get five innings out of Garrett, but Cason went on to the mound and was really, really good,” Jenkins said.

The two pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout. Jenkins was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, while Trevino (pitcher), Morgan (first base) and Schafer (outfield) earned all-tournament honors.

Last week’s game was the final high school game for Morgan, Trevino, Riley Patterson and Alex Rangel. Jenkins spoke highly of his seniors and the slew of underclassmen and newcomers who are projected to go for a third consecutive title in 2026.

“We have a bunch of guys coming,” he said. “We lost so many leaders from last year, but the next leaders took over. Next year, we’ll find the next group of leaders who are going to get us to play at the level we need to play. We had to work hard this year, but this is just as special as last year.”
