Lady Cats bring silver home to the Boro
University of Texas commit Madi Doty stymied Whitesboro softball batters throughout the evening on May 29 during a 9-3 victory for Grandview in the Class 3A-Division I state championship game in Austin.

Doty surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out 11. She was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Grandview, who lost to Coahoma in the State final a year ago, finished the season 35-3. Whitesboro, who reached the state final for the first time in program history, finished 26-12.

The Lady Zebras started the game on fire. They used a triple and an inside the park homerun to seize an early 2-0 lead.

The Lady Bearcats didn’t go away quietly though. Jenna Cole reached base on an error and scored on a triple by Bradi Gallaway to trim the Grandview lead to 2-1.

The score remained the same until the top of the fifth. The Lady Zebras used three hits, a hit batsman and an error to tack on five runs and increase their lead to 7-1.

Grandview used three hits and a hit batsman to add two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-1 advantage. But Whitesboro didn’t give up.

Gallaway hit a leadoff single and scored on a single from Tylar Olsen before Cameron Ortiz scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-3 after six complete. Gallaway (2-4, 3B, RBI), Olsen (1-3, RBI) and Avery Howerton (1-3, 2B) recorded hits for Whitesboro.

Last week’s contest was the final high school game for seniors Gallaway and Olsen.

Lady Cats, Rams named to All-State Tourney Team
Five local softball players were selected to the All-State Tournament Teams after their performances over the past two weeks in the State Tournament.

Those players include Whitesboro junior pitcher Avery Howerton, junior second baseman Reagan Downs and senior third baseman Tylar Olsen. Shortstop Bradi Gallaway was chosen in the utility spot.

The nods came after Whitesboro was the Class 3A Division I runner-up with a 9-3 loss against Grandview last week.

S&S senior third baseman Bri Fowler was selected for the utility spot on the Class 3A Division II All-State Tournament after helping the Rams snap Coahoma’s 90-game win streak in game two of the State semi-final round at Iowa Park.
