Lady Cats make history with first ever STATE championship berth

It took three games, but the Whitesboro Lady Cat softball team has punched their ticket to the State Championship for the first time in school history. 

After a game one loss, the Lady Cats swept the rest of the semi-final series against Iowa Park and sealed the deal with a 6-1 win in game three. 

The series took place over the weekend in Graham. 

The win took Whitesboro to 26-11 on the year. 

They faced Grandview, last year’s state runner-up, for the state championship at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the University of Texas’ Red & Charlene McCombs Field in Austin.

Results were not available as of press time. 

Avery Howerton threw a four-hitter in game three with two strikeouts and two walks.

She also had two hits and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Bradi Gallaway had a home run, walked twice and scored three runs.

Tylar Olsen went 2-for-4.

Reagan Downs scored twice.

Jenna Cole walked and scored once.

Cam Ortiz drove in a run.

The deciding third game was forced after Whitesboro came up big with an 8-1 win in game two. 

Ortiz went 2-for-3 in that affair with a pair of doubles, walked and drove in four runs. 

Howerton went 3-for-4 with a double, drove in a run, scored three times.

She did not allow an earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Gallaway doubled, walked twice and scored three times.

Downs scored twice in game two. 

Emma Parish singled and walked.

The wins in game two and three came after a 2-0 loss in game one.

Howerton allowed two runs on five hits in game engagement. 

She also had six strikeouts and a walk.

Downs singled and walked.

Gallaway singled.

Olsen was hit by a pitch. 

Iowa Park ended their season 31-5.

 

Pirates on to STATE Tourney for third straight year

The defending champion Collinsville Pirate baseball team swept Muenster in the regional final last week at Denton Braswell to punch their ticket to the state semis for the third year in a row. 

Collinsville left the Hornets behind with a 9-5 final in game two.

The win took Collinsville to 29-4 on the year. 

They opened the semi-final round against Stamford at Stephenville Thursday night. Results were not available as of press time. 

Game one kicked off at 4:30 p.m. at Stephenville High School. Game two was immediately thereafter. 

If needed, game three will be Friday at 6 p.m. 

Jaxon Jenkins had a two-run triple to kick start a four-run top of the eighth inning in game two. 

Jenkins went 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and scored twice.

Caysen Schafer doubled, drove in two and scored once.

Paxton Davidson doubled, walked, drove in a run, scored twice.

He also got the win in relief allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks in four and two thirds innings.

Peyton Davidson singled, drove in a run and scored once. 

Travis Emshoff singled and scored.

Cash Morgan singled and walked twice.

This marks the fifth time in school history that Collinsville has made it to the State Tournament. 

They have won 23 of their past 24 games.

Collinsville opened the series with a 9-1 blowout win in game one.

Garrett Trevino allowed a run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six and a third innings.

He also walked three times, drove in a run and scored.

Jaxon Spivey was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored once. 

Jenkins doubled, drove in three and scored.

Schafer walked, drove in a run and scored once. 

Paxton Davidson drove in a run and scored.

Morgan singled and walked in game one.

 

Lady Rams end run in state semis

The S&S Lady Ram softball team ended their historic run over the weekend after dropping two games to Coahoma in the State Semifinals. 

They also ended Coahoma’s 90-game winning streak when they topped the Bulldogs in game two. 

In the end, they were unable to unseat the defending state champs with a 14-0 loss in six innings in game three. 

Lana Walters, Hayden Mowrey and Hayden Kight singled in that affair. 

The Lady Rams ended the year 27-3.

S&S snapped Coahoma’s 90-game winning streak with a win in game two.

The victory came at a cost though as Mowrey showed signs of quadriceps that hindered her for the rest of the day.

In the end, she totaled 210 pitches.

S&S forced a game three with a 4-2 victory.

Kight and Bri Fowler hit solo homers in game two.

Walters and Izzie Talamantes each scored.

Mowrey allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. 

They opened the series with a 2-0 loss in game one in which Mowrey singled and allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk during. game one.

Walters walked twice.

Brooklyn Sterling and Tynslie Adcock were hit by pitches.

Coahoma advanced to 34-1 on the year and will face Lexington for the State Championship at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the University of Texas’ Red & Charlene McCombs Field in Austin.

 

Tioga 7 on 7 bound for state

The Tioga Bulldogs are once again returning to the state 7-on-7 tournament after earning a berth last week at the Lindsay State Qualifying Tournament.

The state tournament will be June 26-28 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

Tioga qualified at the Lindsay Tournament advancing out of Pool B with a 49-0 victory over Millsap and an 18-0 win against Era. 

The Bulldogs then beat Blue Ridge out of Pool A with a 27-13 final.

They secured their spot at state with a 32-12 win over Wolfe City.

This is the third year in a row that Tioga has qualified for state.
