The Whitesboro Elementary PTO hosted its second Science Fair at Whitesboro Intermediate School last Thursday. Twenty 3rd, 4th and 5th graders entered the optional event. Each student was tasked with identifying a question, creating a hypothesis and conducting an experiment to determine the outcome.
Projects ranged from determining whether a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s to determining whether a lemon could conduct electricity. Projects were set up in the school’s cafeteria that afternoon, and a panel of six judges assessed the projects that day.
This year’s judges included Bryce Thompson, a graduating Whitesboro High School (WHS) senior engineering student; Misty Nordhoff, registered nurse; William Welch, commercial general contractor; Michael Parish, firefighter/paramedic; Abigail Davidson, WHS chemistry teacher; and Jesse Bennett, senior stress analyst for Kinetic Aerospace Engineering Services.
That evening, the cafeteria was open from 5-6 p.m. for family, friends and community members to come and see the projects. At that time, every participant was given a ribbon for the hard work they put into their projects. Then, the evening concluded with the presentation of awards. Based on a scoring system the judges used to assess the projects, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons were given to the top three scoring projects in each grade level.
Third grade winners were:
1st place – Jack Wisener
2nd place – Lila Meziere
3rd place – Atticus Coleman
Fourth grade winners were:
1st place – Talon Cohorn
2nd place – Maxwell Schultz
3rd place – Emma Miles
Fifth grade winners were:
1st place – Bryce Cain
2nd place – Addison Crabtree
3rd place – Steele McCool
All of this year’s participants came up with clever project ideas this year and impressed the judges, event organizers and attendees alike. Congratulations to all of the participants for a successful event to wrap up the school year.
