West Grayson Retired School Personnel Association (WGRSPA) donated 72 copies of Peter Brown’s book, “The Wild Robot Escapes” to the S&S  Elementary School on May 14.

“A third-grade student was so excited about reading the book. But when he found out he actually got to keep the book he was even more excited,” said Denise Barnes, WGRSPA member who teaches at S&S.

Having already studied Brown’s first book in the series, “The Wild Robot,” the 63 third graders were quite happy about now having the sequel as their own. Each book was accompanied by an S&S bookmark commemorating Rams Reading Day with room on the back for student creativity.

WGRSPA members present were President Sue Barker, Book Project Committee Chair Doris Haynie, committee member in charge of S&S Denise Barnes, Sharon Golden, Mary Nan Story and Sharon Lively. Third grade teachers there were Carol Barton, Diane Yost, Leslie White, Shelby Hall, Jessica Campbell, Kathy Piler and India Champion’s substitute.

Also attending were Kim Calvert, S&S Elementary Principal; Mark Pelzel, Assistant Elementary Principal; and Jeff Russell, S&S Superintendent. In addition, high school teachers Sharon Waters, Nicole Gumpert, Jasara Russell and Denise Barnes all accompanied the high schoolers who read the new books with the third graders. They were members of FCCLA, FCA, and/or Student Council.

This special emphasis on reading was obviously successful as third graders left with their new books in hand amidst comments of WGRSPA needing to do this more often and the question, “When are we going to do this again?”
