Ten members of Red River Authors attended a recent meeting at Whitesboro’s House of Brews as author N.L. McLaughlin presented information on best publishing practices. She reminded members that not all publishers have the author’s best interests at heart. She encouraged authors to avoid vanity press editors who require payment up front and suggested taking a course with Dave Chessen (Publisher Rocket).

McLaughlin has published several books, including “American Nomad,” “Lost Boys,” “Imaginary Dragons” and “True North.” She urged the attending authors to use Facebook, Instagram and X to advertise their work.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month at 10 a.m., rotating between Gainesville and Whitesboro locations. The June meeting will be held at the Whitesboro Public Library.

Monthly meetings consist of a short program and discussion of projects everyone is working on. All authors are welcome. Contact Susan Bateman at [email protected] for more information.

Red River Authors began on September 7, 2023. The group consists of 20 authors from Grayson and Cooke Counties who are primarily self-published and range in genre from nonfiction, fiction, mystery and romance to children’s books, fantasy and thriller.

The Red River Authors will have a booth at the Community Center Event in Callisburg on May 17 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Come say hi and purchase a book.
