NEW SCHOOL ON THE WAY IN TIOGA
It’s been a long time since the small town of Tioga has had its own high school.

Long enough that it is time for a change, or so says a majority of voters who enabled the passing of an $8-million bond package that will make it happen. It will be the first high school there since the early 1960s.

Tioga Superintendent Tony Daugherty said that Tioga High School could be open as early as the fall of 2006,

Daugherty feels not having a high school limits the community in its growth potential as it discourages individuals from moving to a location where their children cannot attend the same school until they graduate.

C’VILLE SEES MAYORAL CHANGE FOR FIRST TIME IN ALMOST A DECADE
The voters in Collinsville opted for a change in leadership Saturday as they voted in Brad Kerr as the new mayor.

In doing so, Kerr ousted longtime Mayor Wayne “Red” McCorkle, who has served the city for just short of a decade. The vote was 163-97 in Kerr’s favor.

The two remaining seats were uncontested with incumbents John Lahr taking 136 votes and Grady Carney taking 167.

SATELLITE SYSTEM INSTALLED AT COLLINSVILLE SCHOOLS
An interactive satellite system, recently received by Collinsville I.S.D. through a Region X Service Education Center grant, will significantly enhance advanced curriculum for high school students.

Collinsville was the sole recipient among 70 applicants who claimed the STAR Schools award -- designed to offer unaffordable courses to rural and poor districts.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry said he initially applied for the grant during 1994, then received notification during April that the district had been selected. Already, he noted, a facilitator from Region X has visited the campus to access proper installation of equipment.

Utilization of a satellite-transmitted program, beamed to a television monitor, will enable students to listen to top-notch instructors from across the state and ask questions accordingly.

Approximately 25 courses will be available on the menu.

Owned by Jim Jackson of  Route 1, the track and boarding complex is under construction at the 60-acre 4-J Thoroughbred Ranch.

Dirt Contractor Clint Vaughn, owner and operator of Catskinner’s, Whitesboro, is constructing the oval training track which is five-eighths of a mile in length and will feature starting gates for four horses. It also has 440-yard straightaways that lead into regulation banked curves.

The 4-J race track marks the second one Vaughn has constructed. His first track was completed in late 1984 at the Sam Howard Stables in Gordonville.
